Sunset on the Mississippi River, Near Nauvoo, Illinois
One summer day in July, my family took a walk on the shore of the Mississippi River, and were treated to this incredible sunset. The items floating in the water are water lilies, shadowed by the sunset and low light conditions.
These water lilies grow on acres and acres shoreline in sloughs and estuaries of the Mississippi River near Nauvoo Illinois, a river town bordering southern Iowa. I love the creamy white flowers and the lovely bowl-shaped leaves.
Sometimes you go looking for one photo but you get something else that is truly incredible. If you look at the wings on this swallowtail butterfly I noticed on a summer walk next to the Mississippi River, you'll see scales!
When I captured this incredible sunset image of the Mississippi River near Nauvoo, Illinois, I only later noticed the flock of birds flying in a perfect line over the water. Another everyday wonder in an already beautiful part of my neck of the woods.
The sun is setting over the distant horizon north of Nauvoo, Illinois, where our family took a short summer weekend vacation. The magic of the glowing river, a child silhouetted in the foreground, and rippling water make a great recipe for everyday wonder.
